I found Amanda Ashby through Jessica Brody’s website/blog Free Book Friday one day and ended up buying her first novel You Had Me at Halo after hearing the podcast interview. I was so excited when I heard about her that next book which was a young adult novel called Zombie Queen of Newbury High was going to come out in March 2009. I bought the book as soon as it came out and though it it took me a bit of time I finally read the book and was not disappointed when I finished it. I really loved the cover of the novel when I went to Amanda Ashby’s website after hearing her podcast interview with Jessica Brody. I thought the blurb was very intriguing because I have never read a zombie novel before but I have seen some zombie movies though that were really great. The main character Mia is a quiet, unpopular, non-cheerleading teenage girl who has been dating and asked to the prom by Rob the super hot football player. She thought she was blissfully happy and that nothing could be better but then enters Samantha, the cheerleading queen and Miss Popularity, who is Mia’s enemy and has made it quite clear that Rob should be her prom date.
So right now Mia is desperate to make sure she doesn’t end up dumped in front of the whole school by Rob since Samantha is trying her hardest to steal him away from Mia. So with prom in just a few days Mia turns to Candice—her holistic, hypochondriac best friend—who takes her to a strange and unusal shop where Candice gets her natural medical herbs for all the conditions she thinks she has. That is when Mia is tempted to try someting she never would have thought possible and ends up deciding to try a love spell to make Rob stay with her at least until prom night. Unfortunately, she ends up casting a zombie virus on her whole class instead, and she ends up being their zombie queen! At first, she loves all the attention but when she learns from the zombie hunter hottie Chase that her classmates will actually try to eat her in a few days, she’s not too thrilled about that. Mia’s sure she and Chase can figure something out because she infected her classmates with the zombie virus and doesn’t want them to die and become the undead who want to eat her up like the fried chicken they think she smells like.
I thought that this is one funny novel that was such a joy reading because there was a lot of cool zombie action going on that had me flipping the pages so fast I almost got a paper cut. Mia is a wonderful character that was really relatable because it was not to long ago that I was her age and felt about almost all the same things she was going through except I didn’t turn my classmates into zombies. I also really thought that Chase is such a hottie who is really meant for Mia more than Rob is because Chase and Mia have more in common with each other than Rob and Mia. Chase is also someone who I think is the right guy for Mia since they believe in extra ordinary things that others would just laugh off and think is crazy. Amanda Ashby delievers a fun, exciting and zombie filled young adult novel that is great for everyone no matter if they are adults or teenagers. I really see a good possibility of this become the start of a series but that is up to Amanda Ashby but if I could I would totally try to convince Amanda to consider writing more about Mia and Chase. I think that there could be more zombie action for Mia and Chase with the way the novel ended so I hope if Amanda Ashby is reading this she could really consider it a possibility. I give this book 4 Open Books:

A prom night Mia will NEVER FORGET…
Quiet, unpopular, non-cheerleading Mia is blissfully happy. Rob—super hot football god—has asked her to prom! Life couldn’t get any better. Enter Samantha—cheerleading queen and Miss Popularity—who has made it quite clear that Rob should be her prom date. Mia is desperate to make sure she doesn’t end up dumped in front of the whole school. So with prom in just a few days, she turns to Candice—her holistic, hypochondriac best friend—and decides to try a love spell to make Rob stay with her. But when she learns from zombie hunter hottie Chase that her classmates will actually try to eat her in a few days, she’s not too thrilled. She’s sure she and Chase can figure something out, but in the meantime, she’s suggesting that no one wear white to prom, because things could get very messy.

  • Hey Phoebe – thank you so much for your lovely review! I’m so pleased you enjoyed Zombie! I had so much fun writing it and would be more than happy to do some more books about Mia and Chase (and the living dead!) so let’s hope that my editor is keen on the idea! Btw, I’m also very happy to see that you’ve got your Naked David Boreanaz Club badge up – I approve!!!!

  • Well Amanda thank you for writing such a wonderful YA and for stopping by my blog. I am crossing my fingers that your editor is keen with the idea because I know I’m not the only one who is probably wanting more books about Mia and Chase (and the ZOMBIES!).

Well just click on the Naked David Boreanaz Club badge and you will be lead to the original big picture of it to enjoy.

I'm a part-time aspiring romance novelist, book reviewer and blogger. I've always wanted to travel the world and learn everything I can about other countries. Learning the Italian language is one way of trying to make that dream come true. Traveling will help me with my writing because I'll be learning about the history of the U.S., Latin America, England, Italy, and Ireland, the countries I find so fascinating while reading the romance genre. I read and review romance novels of almost every subgenre along with erotic romance, mystery, sci-fi/fantasy and young adult novels. You can find the reviews at my blogs, Talk About My Favorite Authors and Phoebe Jordan's Reviews. I’ve also started a live podcast show called TAMFA | Phoebe Jordan hosted on Blog Talk Radio. This show is dedicated to everything I love about romance and young adult novels. I love having romance and young adult authors live on my show to be interviewed and showcase their books. I plan to write contemporary romance, romantic suspense, erotic romance, paranormal romance and young adult when I get my writing career started with help from Keta. I'm not sure what genre I'll write to begin with since I love to read so many different romance genres.
